Pop and Rock music in the 70's - 80's in ROMANIA

Music is a real document of a period of time. The style and the lyrics can say a lot about those who composed the music, but also about those who listened to it. It is a testimony about the mentality and the culture of that period. But, besides sound, the music of the 70-80’s was based on text. As it was the easiest to censor text, the text writers should have a vast musical culture to identify similarities and Western influences in the rock music. A lot of bands have chosen "to put on notes" the classical or the contemporary poetry and to process the folklore. The student festivals represented an important opportunity for many bands, and this made the rock music of the 70’s to become more and more professional and auditioned by young students who could combine folk, jazz-fusion, blues-rock, classical music and the electronic music to create a progressive rock and jazz-rock band, a style which tended to reach the heights of performance. The most common instruments found in bands which have adapted these styles were the guitar, the bass guitar, the drums, the keyboard, the trumpet, the saxophone, the flute and optional voice.
In the summer of 1972, the poet Adrian Păunescu set up Flacăra - “The Flame” Cenacle, where the youngest poets and artists with potential asserted themselves, even if they were not welcomed by the state leaders.

Bucharest and Timisoara (the city where the best rock bands appeared) have been fighting for the title of Rock Music Capital. From 1985 to 198, concerts were held twice a week in Student Clubs, Houses of Culture or rented theatre halls. There performed bands coming from all over the country. The notion if club for the 70-80’s was diametrically opposed compared to these days. In general, clubs were places where you could listen to live music, recite, or play. The most known club where Romanian rock was at home, was Club A, a club which has continued to promote new bands.

It is worth mentioning about some musical emblems such as:

BANDS
Esperimental Q

BIOGRAPHY

First appeared was in 1975, in the first volume of the series of Rock Bands, with the members Eugen Tunaru, Valentin Farcas, Nicolae Bucaciuc, Nicolae Delioran, Gheorghe Marcovici.

Experimental Q is a band that won quite a number of prizes at student music festivals. Their song ”Memories from the future” stayed for 54 weeks in the most influential top at that time in Saptamana Magazine and also on the Radio. They scattered to the four winds, and it seemed that all trace of their existence disappeared in the same way as with so many Romanian bands.
There were just a few radio recordings with Experimental Q, although later on as many as 12 recordings appeared on the Internet, but the band had published no official record, so the mystery remained.
At the festival in 1979 organised by Club A, they win the award for original composition with the song "The Funeral March of the Death of an Astronaut". The band falls apart, but under the same name, in 1981, in Club A, they will revive the band, but with other members.
LYRICS
Flori - Flowers

Ape și flori
Pomi râzători
Sunt pentru noi, pentru noi

Waters and flowers
Smiling fruit trees
They're for us, for us.

Munți și păduri
Pomi cântători
Sunt pentru noi, pentru noi

Mountains and forests
Singing trees
They're for us, for us.

MUSICAL REVIEW
The song” Flowers "is launched by Electrecord Audio Records Romanian Company in 1975 and it is a special one from the point of view of the instruments and lyrics. The feeling of the song is supported by the presence of a small number of verses, it is one of gratitude for all the lovely natural elements that surround us and make life more colorful, this being transmitted by certain wind instruments that morph into the twitching of the wind and the smell of flowers.

IRIS

After releasing 2 successful albums, after a concert, the band is censored, but it has managed to keep in touch with the fans. The band has at present a large success, being the most listened to rock band. The first single of Iris band "The Sailboat" appeared in 1978, being made by Brando Emil, the Romanians welcomed it enthusiastically and had a positive perception of it as a band. The song encourages the listener to follow his dreams, teaching him that the biggest obstacles that are in front of him are the obstacles that he himself created.

LYRICS
Corabia cu pânze -The seiling vessel

Bătrânul verde mal
Margine de drum
Sărută apa dulce
Ce-l macină acum
Numai de ai vrea
Gândul rău să alungi
Corabia cu pânze
Atunci ai s-o ajungi

The old green shore
Borders the road
Kisses the sweet waters
That torment him now.
Only if you wanted
The bad thought to put away
The sailing vessel
Then you will reach it.

Lumea-i obosită
Putere nu mai are
Corabia s-o prindă
Să o arunce-n mare
Încearcă să-nțelegi
Ce altul nu pricepe
Tot ce-i mai frumos
De aici încolo începe.

The old green shore
Borders the road
Kisses the sweet waters
That torment him now.
Only if you wanted
The bad thought to put away
The sailing vessel
Then you will reach it.

Corabia cu pânze
Dusă de vânt bun
Pe mare plutește
Și vântul urlă-acum
Păsările cântătoare
Zboară dinspre mal
Și vestesc de stâncile din larg.

The sailing vessel
Pushed on by the good wind
On the sea it floats
And the wind screams now.
The singing birds
Fly off the shore
And they foretell the seas rocks ahead.

In 1984, Iris Band launches the first album of Heavy metal with the same name, the first album in Romania, considered by many fans as the best album of the band.

The album "Iris III-Do not stop" from 1988 includes a well known song "Edelweiss", recorded because of the fears that the band will be forbidden, as more and more advertisements had been received about that. The band was, truly, suspended for an unlimited period of time after a concert in Miercurea Ciuc, but the band and fans were resolute to return on the stage. In exchange, "Edelweiss" became the band anthem.

LYRICS
Fata din vis - The girl from the dream

I remember you, you were standing in front of me
It was enough one look, that I couldn't, I couldn't forget.
With both arms, I try to find you back,
To be together again, it's everything I could wish of.

In my thoughts, for one moment, I would have liked to understand you,
I would have stayed by your side, I hadn't thought I would lose you.
Outside only the wind told me, racing through the night,
To leave time behind , as it flies away fast, too, too fast

I watch the train that was carelessly going by.
The warmth of your wispers was to go away at dawn
Outside there was only the wind hurrying through the night
Teling me to leave time behind as it was flying fast, too fast.
Refren - (Refrain)
Dacă vrei, dacă vrei,
Voi fi cu tine,
Dacă vrei, dacă vrei
Voi sta lângă tïne.
If you want, if you want,
I'll be with you,
If you want, if you want,
I'll be with you.

MUSICAL REVIEW
The lyrics of this song describe the feelings of a lover has, while he remembers a lost love. Overwhelmed by the thoughts and the memories of the girl he loved, he regretted the ending of their story, hoping, however, that it will continue someday and promising the girl, by his song, that he will wait for her forever.

LYRICS
Nu ne-ntoarcem din drum - We wan't go back

Our life is a show with lights on
Who wants can go in , the doors are open
Nothing is lost today, everything transforms
Today a jester and a Hamlet tomorrow, if you're in shape.

Vă rog, nu-ncercați să ne opriți
Drumul nostru e abia la început!
Din nou avem gândul cel bun,
Mai puternici suntem noi cei de-acum.

Please, do not try to stop us
Our journey has just begun!
The good thought is again with us,
Those here, we're stronger now.

Nu ne-ntoarcem din drum (3)
We won’t go back (3)

The road will be long and hard and the dust will lie on
On the hands and clothes wanting to destroy you.
When you think you arrived, you'll be halfway
But your shadow you will see, with the sun behind.

Vă rog nu-ncercați să ne opriți,
Nu ne întoarcem din drum!
Please do not try to stop us,
We won’t go back.

MUSICAL REVIEW
In their first album in 1983 entitled ”HOLOGRAF 1” the resonance musical piece is, ”We Do not go back". This piece illustrates the feelings of the band members, then still young, early on their way to a successful career. Brave, friendly and aware of the beauty that waits ahead, they entice listeners to join them on the road, asking them at the same time, not to try to stop them from their path.

LYRICS
Ziua vrajitoarelor - The Witches Day

On a Thursday, as the local custom, a useless night goes down
It is not , and difeerent ,as well, the clouds fell on ground
The leaves rustled, the dogs howled, as vampires showed their signs
There are the wicked fairies, the destiny witches, and a wizard.

It is their day today, the fairies’ day, the witches’, till dawn
They gather together and give advice , they boil pots of liquors
Beans and ants, herbs and stinging nettle, everything is at their hands
Love and dream, hell and paradise, your destiny written in your palm.

O, o, o, ai un mare noroc!
O, o, o, ghinioane deloc!

Oh,ooo, you are lucky
No bad luck at all
Don’t believe everything you see, that’s your destiny
You may ask the witches, the witches, witches.

Oh, o o o, you are lucky
No bad luck at all
Don’t believe everything you see, that’s your destiny

LYRICS
Deschideți poarta soarelui
Open the door to the sun

Vin uneori ploi reci pe albe flori
Cad uneori cu aripa umedă de nori
Și ne rănesc ploapa fină,
Porumbei rătăciți peste zări.

Sometimes cold rains fall on white flowers
And hurt our delicate eyelid
They fall with a wet wing of clouds
Doves wander over the horizon.

Refren (Refrain):

Deschideți poarta soarelui
Să poată răsări
Pe adâncul cer senin și pur
Din ochii de copii
Deschideți poarta soarelui
Să poată lumina
Veșnicii de flori și fruct și zbor
Cât timpul va dura.

Open the door to the sun
So that it could rise
On the deep clear sky of
Children’s eyes.
Open the sun door
So that it could shine
Eternities of flowers, friuts and flight
As long as time will last.

Un soare blând răsare pe pământ
Și totul iar reânvie
Din vis trezit se înalță peste infinit
Un sărut lumii dăruind.

A mild sun rises over the earth
And everything comes to life
Awaken from its dream ,a kiss is given to the world
From the hight of the infinity of skys.

Refren (Refrain).....

Unwanted nights
Go to sleep along the gates
And a thought makes our soul ache
Which will be forgotten when the golden dawns arrive
And the sun will go up in the sky.

Refren (Refrain)...

Ca într-un mit
Dintr-un alt timp venit
Dansul solar ne dă viață
Ne dă puteri să învingem
Cât ar fi de greu
Și un vis că vom fi mereu

As in a myth
From far beyond arrived
The sunny dance gives us life
It will give us the power to win
No matter how difficult
And a dream will be forever.

Refren(x4) Refrain(x4) .....

Nopti – Nights
Valeriu+Sterian+valeriu_sterian_1990.jpg

Refren (Refrain):
Doamne, vino Doamne,
Oh, God, Please come
To see what remained of mankind (bis)

Long, sad nights
I think of home
And I see you all there
There are nights full of horror for me, during war
There are fairy nights there for you
And , oh God, why sahll I have a nightmare life
And for whom do we die in vain
There are nights full of horror
When I am afraid to feel
There are fairy nights that I almost forgot about

Refren (Refrain)....

Why don’t you put an end to this terrible war
Why do you think only of yourselves
And you do not care of the mother crying fro
Her dead son lying in bloody mud
And you do not care at all of those who had gone
Of those who accuse you from beyond the grave.

LYRICS
Noapte albastră - The blue night
Noaptea și-a deschis aripa
Și-a întins pe strada noastră
Un covor de mii de stele
Doar pentru noi
Luna în cuibul ei albastru
Cerne fluturi de lumină
Ce dansează în jurul nostru
Pentru amândoi

The night opened the wing
Stretched out on our street
A carpet of thousands of stars
Just for us
The blue nest of the moon
Sieves butterflies of light
Dancing around us
For both of us.

Noapte albastră
La poarta noastră
Te oprești o clipă
La geamul nostru să privești
Noapte albastră
Bați la fereastră
Nemărginirea
În ochii noștri s-o sădești.

Blue night
At our gate
You stop for a moment
At our window to watch
Blue night
Knocking at the window
The boundlessness
Laying out in our eyes.

Pas cu pas se duce ziua
Spre hotarele luminii
Depărtându-se agale
Pe drumul său
Și din nou în pragul nopții
Un luceafăr ne zâmbește
Așteptând ca întotdeauna
Surâsul tău.

Step by step goes the day
To the light boundaries
Moving away slowly
On his way
And again on the verge of night
A star smiles at us
Waiting as always for
Your modest smile.

Good evening, my sweet heart! I wait for you to bring me
From the sky huge continents of pale mystery!
By this lonely and slow train.
Good evening, sweet heart.

I wait for you to bring me from the sky
Huge continents of pale mystery!
Aaaaaaaa.....
Good evening, sweet heart! I wait for you as our love were the only thing on the Earth (bis)

Ion Caramitru:
Good evening, sweet heart!...I can put it in words that there are few holy things on the Earth
That premature love finds its rest in tombs
Good evening, sweet heart!
There many who want to bar the door of our love ...to handcuff the word „longing for”
Good evening, sweet heart!

LoredanaGroza:
Sweetheart, good evening!
I wait fro you to bring me from the sky
Huge continents of pale mystery
Aaaaaaa.............
Good evening, sweet heart!
I wait fro you as our love were the only thing on the Earth
Above everything...Good evening, sweet heart....
I wait for you as our love were the only thing on the Earth
Above grandeurs, falling downs, grandeurs, ....words. ( Bis)
Ion Caramitru:
Good evening, my sweet heart! I wait for you to bring me
From the sky huge continents of pale mystery!
By this lonely and slow train.
Good evening, sweet heart.

The 70-80’s Rock, in Romania, has really succeeded in transmitting a message to the public who have supported all these bands. Due to the political problems, the bond between the band and the public has got more and more strengthened, confirmed by the devotion put in the band resistance over the past few years and the applause for minutes on end, after every concert.
