Pop Rock Music in Hungary in the 70's and 80's

At the beginning of the 1970s people’s lives became a bit easier. While huge factories and large agricultural companies were typical, there were some liberalisations in the economy. Hungary was often referred to as ’the happiest barack’ in the Eastern bloc meaning that people lived a bit better and could travel a bit easier than in many other countries in Eastern Europe.

Still, people could not say or even sing everything they wanted and there was a so called ’Song Committee’ that checked all the lyrics before songs were allowed to be played in the radio. Certain groups and songs were forbidden, at least for a while.

Nevertheless there was good music and each year a festival showcased the newest songs in the form of a competition on TV, very much like the X-factor today.

Groups that started in the 60’s like Illés and Omega continued to be very popular. Classic rock was also popular with groups like LGT and Bergendy and also Kati Kovács. The influence of folk music was still important on popular music and we can see this in the music of the Fonograf Band or Illés Band or Zsuzsa Koncz. The groups Corvina, Generál and Beatrice played pop music also had lots of fans. Panta Rhei was the first Hungarian group to use a synthesizer, in fact, they designed and build their own synthesizers and they played progressive rock.

In the 1980s people wanted more freedom, more of everything and songs became louder and the texts showed more dissatisfaction. Beatrice Band started to play punk music instead of pop. Concerts started to become more important parts of young people. The groups EDDA, Bikini and P. Mobil also played hard music. On the other hand, easy disco music moved in and the Neoton Familia was very popular along with Róbert Szikora. Rock and roll became extremely popular with the Hungária Band.

LGT
LGT.jpgLokomotiv GT is a rock band in Hungary that was formed in 1971 and had some members from the band Omega. They liked using the symbol of a lokomotive on their albums. GT means Gran Turismo referring to the great tour they were going to take. Some members changed in the twenty years of the group, where the most important people were Gábor Presser, Tamás Somló, János Karácsony, János Solti, Károly Frenreisz and József Laux.

LGT lemez.jpgThey were so popular that they were invited to foreign concerts as well, for example to the World Popular Song Festival in Tokyo in 1971 or to London to the Great Western festival and later went to England and other countries many times. They were extremely popular in Hungary. In 1987 the group dissolved and the members started individual careers – but had a number of reunion concerts in recent years.

One of their most successful songs is Álomarcú lány, meaning Dreamy-faced girl (the English version is Lady of the Night – the English version is not the exact translation of the Hungarian original)
LGT - Álomarcú lány (1979)
Locomotiv GT - Lady of the Night

Hívok egy régi álmot,
Várom, ki benne áll, álomarcú lány,
Értem, ha szólal bennem,
Érzem, ha megérint, álomarcú lány,
Mindig gondolj rám!

Átkarol, hogyha kérem,
Rám hajol, úgy, mint rég, álomarcú lány,
Érti, hogy miért is nézem,
Érzi, hogy miért is fáj, álomarcú lány,
Mindig gondolj rám!

Szép, mint egy színes álom,
Kár, hogy csak néha lát, álomarcú lány,
Vállamra száll a hajnal,
Búcsúzik ő is már, álomarcú lány,
Mindig gondolj rám!

Álomarcú lány!
Mindig gondolj rám!
Lépj közel hozzám!
Mindig gondolj rám!
Vidd el éjszakám!
Mindig gondolj rám!
Álomarcú lány!
Here comes the night to touch me
Dark shadows roll to hide
Lady of the Night
Dreams like a river hold me
Showin' your face inside
Lady of the Night

Let me see your light
Teach me a word to say
Show me a place to stay
Lady of the Night
Hold me when I'm fallin'
Hold me, hold me tight
Lady of the Night

Let me see your light
Please help me keep on higher
Until the day I die
Lady of the Night
Give me some inspiration
Give me another try
Lady of the Night

Help me through the night
Lady of the Night
Let me see your light
Lady of the Night
Hold me, hold me tight
Lady of the Night
Let me see your light
Lady of the Night

Kati Kovács

Kovacs Kati.jpgShe has been popular since she appeared first on stage in 1962. Her songs became well-known through the ’Who Knows What?’ competitions. She has a very easily recognisable raspy voice. She often sang in England, Ireland and Germany, as well. She wrote the lyrics to some of her songs. One of her most popular songs are ’Add már, Uram, az esőt!’ = My Lord, Give Us Rain!
Add már, Uram, az esőt!

My Lord, Give Us Rain

Szomjas a föld és éhesek a fák
Add már, uram, az esőt!
Sárga a zöld és száraz a világ
Add már, Uram, az esőt!

Kókad a búza, meghal a virág
Add már, Uram, az esőt!
Hozd el a csúnya időt
Add már, Uram, az esőt!

Bámul az égre a fiú meg a lány
Add már, Uram, az esőt!
Bőg a sok állat eledel után
Add már, Uram, az esőt!

Könnyeik öntözik csak a legelőt
Add már, Uram, az esőt!
Fújd el a gonosz időt
Add már, Uram, az esőt!

Add már, óóóó, ah-ooh!
Add már,
Add már,
Add már,
Add már, add már,
ohohohoho….
Ná-ná-ná-ná-ná…
Oh, oh

Szomjas a föld és alig-alig él
Add már, Uram, az esőt!
Roppan a fű és törik a levél
Add már, Uram, az esőt!

Ó, ha ez így megy, oda a kenyér
Add már, Uram, az esőt!
Enyhítsd meg a levegőt
Add már, Uram, az esőt!

Éjszínű felleget közelít a szél
Hoz már az Uram esőt!
Telnek a vödrök és csobog a remény

Add már az Uram esőt!
Emberek éneke az egekig ér
Add már, Uram, az esőt!
Add már, Uram, az esőt!

Add már!
Uram!
Az esőt!

The fields are thirsty and the trees are hungry,
My Lord, give us rain already!
The green is yellow and the flowers are dry,
My Lord, give us rain already!

The wheat is fading, the flowers will die,
My Lord, give us rain already!
Bring the bad weather,
My Lord, give us rain already!

The boy and the girl staring at the sky,
My Lord, give us rain already!
The animals cry, 'cause are hungry,
My Lord, give us rain already!

Only their tears irrigated the fields,
My Lord, give us rain already!
Blow out the bad weather,
My Lord, give us rain already!

Give us already, ohh, ah-ooh!
Give us already,
Give us already,
Give us already,
Give us already, give us already,
Ohohoh...
Na-na-na-na-na
Oh, oh.

The fields are thirsty, they're barely alive,
My Lord, give us rain already!
Crack the grass and break the leafs,
My Lord, give us rain already!

Oh, if it goes this way, the bread is over,
My Lord, give us rain already!
Freshed up the air,
My Lord, give us rain already!

The wind bring a night-dark cloud,
My Lord, bring us rain already!
The buckets filled up, the hope are gurgle,
My Lord, give us rain already!

People's song reach the sky,
My Lord, give us rain already!
My Lord, give us rain already!

Give us already!
My Lord!
The rain!

Zsuzsa Koncz with the Illés Band

Koncz Illes.jpgThe singer with beautiful voice and the extremely popular band had many songs together. In 1973 they (together with the Tolcsvay Trio) released an album which was banned immediately due to a song that became well-known anyway. The song was based on the melody of a folk song and the text could be easily interpreted as a protest against there gime. The lyrics of this song by János Bródy is highly critical of the country's pre-1990 political system. It expresses people’s wish for political openness in a country where borders were closed and people couldn’t travel freely and also their wish for political neutrality and independence. It was banned for years but even then it was sung it around campfires. This beautiful song is still loved and sung by performers.
Ha én rózsa volnék

If I Were a Rose

(If subtitles do not appear, turn Transcript (down at the right))The translation is excellent because it has as many syllables as the original Hungarian lyrics and it makes it easy to sing.
Ha én rózsa volnék, nem csak egyszer nyilnék,
Minden évben négyszer virágba borulnék,
Nyílnék a fiúnak nyilnék én a lánynak
Az igaz szerelemnek és az elmúlásnak.

Ha én kapu volnék, mindig nyitva állnék,
Akárhonnan jönne, bárkit beengednék,
Nem kérdezném tőle, hát téged ki küldött,
Akkor lennék boldog, ha mindenki eljött.

Ha én ablak volnék, akkora nagy lennék,
Hogy az egész világ láthatóvá váljék,
Megértő szemekkel átnéznének rajtam,
Akkor lennék boldog, ha mindent megmutattam.

Ha én utca volnék, mindig tiszta lennék,
Minden áldott este fényben megfürödnék,
És ha egyszer rajtam lánckerék taposna,
Alattam a föld is sírva beomolna.

Ha én zászló volnék, sohasem lobognék,
Mindenféle szélnek haragosa lennék,
Akkor lennék boldog, ha kifeszítenének,
S nem lennék játéka mindenféle szélnek.

If I were a rose, dear, I'd be blooming all year.
I would flourish four times, throughout every year.
I would bloom for the boy, I'd bloom for the girl, then.
For true love all around us and for the fleeting moment.

If I were a gate, dear, I'd be always open,
From wherever they'd come, I'd let anyone in.
I sure wouldn't ask them, I wonder who sent you?
I'd be only happy, if everyone came through.

If I were a window, I would be so wide, dear.
You could see the whole world, from corner to corner.
With all-knowing glances, they'd be looking through me.
I'd only be happy, if I had shown everything.

If I were a street, dear, I'd be always pristine.
Every blessed night, in the light I would bathe.
And if one day tanks stomped their tracks upon me.
With a cry, the earth would collapse underneath me.

If I were a flag, dear, you'd never see me waving.
I'd be wrathful with all the wind around me
(she's referring to political extremes).
I'd only be happy if they stretched me tightly.
So, I wouldn't be the play-thing of all the winds around me.

‘Question’ and ‘Answer’ were also highly popular songs about the basic question of love: Why do I love you?
Generál: Kérdés/Question

Magyar szöveg:
Kérdeztem az éjszakai csendtől,
Kérdeztem, de néma volt,
És a száz alakban visszatérő kérdés:
Mit akarok? Mit akarok tőled én?
Faggattam a tisztafényű hajnalt,
Faggattam, de hallgatott,
És a száz alakban visszatérő kérdés:
Mit keresek? Mit keresek nálad én?
Égő Nap - Tőle tán most megtudom majd,
Mért kell még - Ez a fájó, édes, furcsa játék,
Próbáltam - De hisz' nem lehet ezt félbehagyni,
Már nem tudom - Soha elfeledni, megtagadni én!
Kérdeztem a bíbor színű alkonyt,
Faggatom, de nem beszél,
És a száz alakban visszatérő kérdés:
Mért szeretlek? Mért szeretlek mégis én?
In English:
I asked the silence of the night
I asked it but it was mute
And the returning question in hundred form:
What do I want? What do I want from you?
I quizzed the clear lighted dawn
I quizzed it, but it was silent
And the returning question in hundred form:
What am I doing? What am I doing at you?
Bright sun - maybe it tells me now
Why do we play- this painful, sweet, strange game
I tried - but it cannot be interrupted
I cannot - never forget it, deny it
I asked the purple colored dusk
I quizzed it, but it did not speak
And the returning question in hundred form:
Why do I love? Why do I love you after all?

Beatrice
n-5398.jpgOriginally it was a girls’ band but later on it had lots of different members. The most important member who is considered to be the founder of the band still playing is Feró Nagy whose son Hunor Attila Nagy is also a member of the group. The original band started to play disco music but soon the men moved towards hard rock and punk rock. At the end of the seventies they became the „bad guys” because their songs were about the ’small people’ but their concerts got more and more popular. Later Beatrice dissolved and was reorganized again. One of their most well-known songs is ’Those happy days’ which sings about the happy days in an ironic voice and it is considered to refer to the years before 1989, the change of the political system.
Azok a boldog szép napok / Those Happy Day

Magyar szöveg:
Már csak emlék,
Mikor még nem voltál.
Az volt az igazi nyár
Az idő oly gyorsan száll
Amikor nem vagy itt velem,
Elfog a rettegés.
Minden kis zajra felébredek,
Mert azt hiszem megjöttél.
Te nem érzed,
Nem érzed azt a kínt,
Amikor éjjel itt maradsz,
A magányról álmodik a remény.
Ahogy megjöttél, rögtön ősz lett,
Majd hirtelen tél,
Más lett a föld és más a világ,
Havat hord a szél.
Azok a boldog, szép napok, ég veled!
Te nem tudod, milyen jó nélküled.
Azok a boldog, szép napok, ég veled!
Te nem tudod, milyen jó nélküled.
Ma már csak emlék,
Mikor még nem voltál.
Az volt az igazi nyár
Az idő oly' gyorsan száll
A legszebb pillanat, amikor búcsúzunk
És a vonatra felszállsz
Könnyes szemmel arra gondolok,
Hogy nehogy lemaradjál!
Azok a boldog szép napok, ég veled!
Te nem tudod, milyen jó nélküled.
Jönnek a boldog, szép napok, ég veled!
Te nem tudod, milyen jó nélküled.
In English:
Those happy, nice days - goodbye!
Those happy, nice days - You don’t know how nice it is without you.
The nicest moment is
when you get on the train
With tears in my eyes I’m thinking
Oh, you shouldn’t miss the train.
