Pop Rock music in Spain in the 70's

At the beginning of this decade, Spain was under the military dictatorship of general Francisco Franco, since the coup d'état in 1936 which finished with the Second Spanish Republic. However, the dictatorship was coming to an end, and Mr. Juan Carlos de Borbón was proclaimed as Prince of Asturias and next king of Spain in 1970. In 1973 Mr. Luis Carrero Blanco, at the time Prime Minister and previously appointed by general Franco as his successor as Head of State, was assassinated in a terrorist attack by ETA, a Basque terrorist group. On 20 November 1975, general Franciso Franco died and Mr. Juan Carlos was finally crowned as Juan Carlos I, king of Spain.

Things began to change at last in Spain: in 1975, Mr. Adolfo Suárez was appointed by the new king as Prime Minister, and he also declared a general amnesty for the political prisoners. Catalan, Basque and Galician were declared official languages as well as Spanish. In 1977, political parties were legalised together with trade unions, and there were the first totally democratic general elections in Spain. Mr. Adolfo Suárez and his centrist coalition UCD (Unión de Centro Democrático / Democratic Centrist Union) won these elections and he was designated as President of Spain. Finally, in 1978 the new Constitution was enacted after a referendum as part of the Spanish transition to democracy.

Escucha hermano la canción de la alegría,
el canto alegre del que espera
un nuevo día.

(Listen brother the song of joy,
the happy song of those who wait for
a new day to come.)

Ven canta, sueña cantando,
vive soñando el nuevo sol.
En que los hombres
volverán a ser hermanos.

Ven, canta, sueña cantando,
vive soñando el nuevo sol.
En que los hombres
volverán a ser hermanos.

(Come, sing, dream singing,
live dreaming for the new sun to come.
When men will
become brothers again.

Come, sing, dream singing,
live dreaming for the new sun to come.
When men will
become brothers again.)

(If in your journey there’s only sadness,
and the bitter crying
of complete solitude.)

Ven, canta, sueña cantando,
vive soñando el nuevo sol.
En que los hombres
volverán a ser hermanos.

(Come, sing, dream singing,
live dreaming for the new sun to come. When men willbecome brothers again.)
Si es que no encuentras la alegría
en esta tierra,
búscala hermano
más allá de las estrellas.

in this land,
look for it, brother
far away from the stars.)

LYRICS: "Libre" ("Free")

Tiene casi veinte años y ya está
cansado de soñar,
pero tras la frontera está su hogar,
su mundo, su ciudad.

(He's almost 20 years old and he's already
tired of dreaming,
But behind the border there is his home,
his world and his city.)

Piensa que la alambrada sólo es
un trozo de metal,
algo que nunca puede detener
sus ansias de volar.

(He thinks that the barbed-wire fence is just
a piece of metal,
something that can never stop
his desire to fly away.)

(Free, like the sun when it rises
I am free, like the sea.
Free, like the bird which escaped from its prison
and can finally fly away.
Free, as the wind which picks up my sorrow and my grief,
I keep on walking looking for the truth
and I will finally know what is freedom.)

Con su amor por bandera se marchó
cantando una canción,
marchaba tan feliz que no escuchó
la voz que le llamó.

(With love as flag he left away
singing a song,
he went away so happy that he didn't hear
the voice that called him.)

Y tendido en el suelo se quedó
sonriendo y sin hablar,
sobre su pecho flores carmesí,
brotaban sin cesar...

(And lying on the ground he was left
smiling and without talking,
over his breast red flowersgrew constantly...)

(Free, like the sun when it rises
I am free, like the sea.
Free, like the bird which escaped from its prison
and can finally fly away.
Free, as the wind which picks up my sorrow and my grief,
I keep on walking looking for the truth
and I will finally know what is freedom.)

MUSICAL REVIEW

This song is about a young man who lives under the communist regime in East Berlin and dreams about the world beyond the Berlin Wall. One day he manages to cross to the other side but a soldier shouts him to stop, but he doesn’t listen to him as he is going happily singing as he is free now, so the soldier shoots him and kills him. This fact was very common during the Cold War for those who wanted cross the wall to West Berlin.
As far as time is concerned, we can say that it is duple time. As for tempo we can say that it is Andante, in other words, moderately quick. In the song we can hear an orchestra, a mandolin, an acoustic guitar, an electric bass and a choir.

LYRICS: "Vivir así es morir de amor" ("Living like this is like dying of love")

Siempre me traiciona la razón
y me domina el corazón,
no se luchar contra el amor.
Siempre me voy a enamorar
de quien de mi no se enamora,
y es por eso que mi alma llora.

(Reason always betrays me
and rules my heart,
I don’t know how to fight against love.
I always fall in love
with someone who doesn't love me,
and for this reason my soul cries.)

Y ya no puedo más,
ya no puedo más,
siempre se repite la misma historia.
Y ya no puedo más,
ya no puedo más,
estoy harto de rodar como una noria.

(And I can’t stand it anymore,
I can’t stand it anymore,
It's always the same story repeating itself.
And I can’t stand it anymore,
I can’t stand it anymore,
I am fed up with going round like a big wheel.)

(Living like this is like dying of love
for love I have my soul wounded,
for love, I don’t want more life that her live,
melancholy.

Living like this is like dying of love
I’m a beggar for her kisses,
I’m her friend
and I want to be more than that,
melancholy.)

Siempre se apodera de mi ser,
mi serenidad se vuelve locura,
y me llena de amargura.
Siempre me voy a enamorar
de quien de mi no se enamora
y es por eso que mi alma llora.

(It always takes over my being,
my calm turns into madness,
And it fills me with sorrow.
I always fall in love
with someone who doesn't love me,
and for this reason my soul cries.)

Y ya no puedo más,
ya no puedo más,
siempre se repite la misma historia.
Y ya no puedo más,
ya no puedo más,
estoy harto de rodar como una noria.

(And I can’t stand it anymore,
I can’t stand it anymore,
It's always the same story repeating itself.
And I can’t stand it anymore,
I can’t stand it anymore,
I am fed up with going round like a big wheel.)

Pop Rock music in Spain in the 80's

In this decade Spain continued with the political reforms and its transition to democracy. In 1981 there was a political crisis, president Adolfo Suárez resigned and Mr. Leopoldo Calvo Sotelo was going to be appointed as President of the State. During his investiture in the parliament, the army broke in and there was an attempt of coup d'état by Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Tejero, in order to put an end to democracy in Spain and go back to a second military dictatorship. Fortunately it didn't succeed and Colonel Tejero and the rest of the military leadership resposible for the coup were arrested. In this way democracy was preserved in Spain and millions of people demonstrated in favour of it all over the country.

That same year, in 1981, the Divorce Law was approved, and in 1982 the Socialist Party (PSOE) won the general elections, and Mr. Felipe Golzález was appointed to be the first socialist President of the nation since the recovery of democracy. Whith this fact, the transition of Spain to democracy is considered to be accomplished.

I will sail through your darkness
You, dew, cold kiss
It will burn me away
I will be suffering and love

Me and you, you and me.
You won’t say no
You won't say no
You won’t say no.)

Seré tu amante bandido, bandido
Corazón corazón malherido
Seré tu amante cautivo, cautivo
Seré auuuuhhh
Pasión privada, dorado enemigo
Huracán, huracán abatido
Me perderé en un momento contigo
Por siempre.

(I will be you bandit lover, bandit
A heart, a badly-wounded heart
I will be your captived, captivated lover,
I will be auhhhh
A private passion, golden enemy
Huricane, a weakened hurricane
I will get lost in a moment together with you
Forever.)

Yo seré un hombre por ti
Renunciaré a ser lo que fui
Yo y tú, tú y yo
Sin misterios
Sin misterios
Sin misterios

(I will be a man for you
I will refuse to be what I was once
Me and you, you and me
Without mysteries
Without mysteries
Without mysteries.)

Por siempre, seré tu heroe de amor
Uhh Seré tu heroe de amor
Seré tu heroe.

(Forever, I'll be your hero of love
Uhh I'll be your hero of love
I'll be your hero.)

Seré el amante que muere rendido
Por amor, por amor malherido
Seré tu amante bandido, bandido
Seré auuuuh
En un oasis prohibido, prohibido
Por amor por amor concebido
Me perderé en un momento contigo
Por siempre seré tu heroe de amor
Por siempre seré tu heroe de amor.

(I will be the lover who dies surrendered
Badly hurt for love, for love
I'll be your bandit, bandit lover
I'll be auuuuh
In a forbidden, forbidden oasis
Conceived out of love, out of love
I'll get lost together with you in a moment
Forever I'll be your hero of love.
Forever I'll be your hero of love.)

LYRICS: "No me importa nada" ("I don't care at all ")

Tu juegas a quererme,
y no me importa nada.
Tu juegas a engañarme,
yo juego a que te creas que te creo,
escucho tus bobadas
acerca del amor y del deseo
y no me importa nada.

(You play to loving me,
I play with you thinking I love you too.
Looking for an excuse
you give me an unexpected passion
and I don't care at all.
You play to deceiving me,
I play with you thinking I believe you,
I listen to your nonsense
about love and desire
and I don't care at all.)

Nada
que rias o que sueñes
que digas o que hagas
y no me importa nada
por mucho que me empeñe
estoy jugando y no me importa nada.

(Nothing
if you laugh or you dream
if you say or you do
and I don't care at all
even if I try hard
I'm playing and I don't care at all.)

Tu juegas a tenerme,
yo juego a que te creas que me tienes
serena y confiada,
invento las palabras que te hieren
y no me importa nada
tu juegas a olvidarme,
yo juego a que te creas que me importa
conozco la jugada,
se manejarme en las distancias cortas
y no me importa nada.

(You play to having me,
I play making you think that I'm yours
serene and confident,
I invent the words that hurt you
and I don't care at all
You play to forgetting me,
I play that you think that I care
I already know your trick
I know how to deal with a short-distance relationship
and I don't care at all

Nada
que rías o que sueñes
que digas o que hagas
y no me importa nada
por mucho que me empeñe
que digas o que hagas
y no me importa nada

(Nothing
if you laugh or you dream
if you say or you do
and I don't care at all
even if I try hard
I'm playing and I don't care at all.)

Y no me importa nada
que rias o que sueñes
que digas o que hagas
y no me importa nada
que tomes o que dejes
que vengas o que vayas
y no me importa nada
que subas o que bajes
que entres o que salgas
y no me importa nada.

(And I don't care at all,
if you laugh or you dream
if you say or you do
and I don't care at all
if you take or you leave,
if you come or you go
and I don't care at all
if you go up or you go down,
if you go in or you go out
and I don't care at all.)

LYRICS: "Princesa" ("Princess")

Entre la cirrosis
y la sobredosis
andas siempre, muñeca.
Con tu sucia camisa
y, en lugar de sonrisa,
una especie de mueca.

(Between arthrosis
and an overdose
you are always involved, baby
With your dirty chemise
and instead of a smile
a sort of grimace)

¿Cómo no imaginarte,
cómo no recordarte
hace apenas dos años?
Cuando eras la princesa
de la boca de fresa,
cuando tenías aún esa forma
de hacerme daño.

(How not to imagine you
how not to remember you
not even two years ago?
When you were still the princess
with the strawberry mouth
when you still had that way
of harming me)
Ahora es demasiado tarde, princesa.
Búscate otro perro que te ladre, princesa.
Maldito sea el gurú
que levantó entre tú
y yo un silencio oscuro,
del que ya sólo sales
para decirme, "vale,
déjame veinte duros".

(Now it's too late, princess
Look for another dog which barks at you, pricess.
Curse the guru
who stood up between you and me
a dark silence,
out of which you only go out
to tell me : "okay,
could you lend me 60 cents")

Ya no te tengo miedo
nena, pero no puedo
seguirte en tu viaje.
Cúantas veces hubiera dado la vida entera
porque tú me pidieras
llevarte el equipaje.

(I don't fear you
baby, but I can't
follow you in your travel.
How many times I would have given my whole life
for you to ask me
to take your luggage)

Ahora es demasiado tarde, princesa...

Tú que sembraste en todas
las islas de la moda
las flores de tu gracia,
¿cómo no ibas a verte
envuelta en una muerte
con asalto a farmacia?

(Now it's too late, princess...

You, who sowed in
all the islands of fashion
your gift flowers,
How could you not
get involved in a death
breaking into a chemist's shop?)

¿Con qué ley condenarte
si somos juez y parte
todos de tus andanzas?
Sigue con tus movidas,
pero no pidas
que me pase la vida
pagándote fianzas.

(With which law must we condemn you
if we are both juges and guilty
of your deeds?
Keep on with your troubles,
but don't ask for
me to spend my life
paying your bails)

Ahora es demasiado tarde, princesa
Búscate otro perro que te ladre, princesa.

(Now it's too late, princess
Look for another dog which barks at you, pricess.)

LYRICS: "Cadillac solitario" ("Solitary Cadillac")

Siempre quise ir a L.A.
dejar un día esta ciudad.
Cruzar el mar en tu compañía.

(I always wanted to go to L.A.
to leave this city someday.
To cross the ocean together with you)

y probablemente me habrás olvidado.
No sé qué aventuras correré sin ti.

(But you left me time ago
and you will probably have forgotten me.
I don't know which adventures I will live without you)

(And now I am sitting here
in an old second hand Cadillac
by the Marvellé, at the feet of my city
and now you have just left me,
here at the slopes of Tibidabo mountain,
the last blonde girl who came to
try the back seat)

Quizás el "martini" me ha hecho recordar
nena, por qué no volviste a llamar?
Creí que podía olvidarte sin más
y aún a ratos, ya ves...

(Maybe the "Martini" has made me remember
baby, why you didn't call me again?
I thought I could forget you straight away
and still sometimes, you can see...)

me he quedado solo, fumando un cigarro,
quizás he pensado, nostalgia de ti
y desde esta curva donde estoy parado
me he sorprendido mirando a tu barrio,
y me han atrapado luces de ciudad.

(And when the blonde girl went away I felt strange,
I'm left alone , smoking a cigarrete,
maybe I thought, I long for you,
and from this curve where I'm stopped
I have surprised myself looking to your neighbourhood,
and I've been trapped by those city lights.)

Y no estás tú, nena!

(Dusk will find me
asleep, drunk in the Cadillac,
by the palm trees it shines lonely.
And people say that now you are a responsible person
and I am here drunk in the Cadillac
below the palm trees it shines lonely.
And you're not here, baby!)

(Where were you when I needed you so much?
Nobody is better than nobody else, but you thought you had won.
If I cried at you door it was totally useless.
Pub bars, love dumps.
I showed you my worst bit.)

Retales de mi vida.
fotos a contraluz.
Me siento hoy como un halcón
herido por las flechas de la incertidumbre.

(Strips of my life,
backlight pictures.
I feel today like a falcon
wounded by the arrows of uncertainty.

Me quiero defender.
Dame mi alma y déjame en paz.
Quiero intentar no volver a caer.
Pequeñas tretas para continuar en la brecha.

(I get my hear cut again and again.
I want to defend myself.
Give me my soul back and let me alone.

Hace falta valor, hace falta valor,
ven a la escuela de calor.

(The street is burning by the setting sun,
there are hidden tribes near the river
waiting for the night to come.
It takes courage, it takes courage,
come to school of heat.)

cuida esas manos chico.
Esa paloma sobrevuela el peligro
aprendió en una escuela de calor.

(I know what I have to do to get
you become crazy for me
Come to my side and check the tissue, but
be careful with those hands, boy.
That pigeon flies over the danger
it learned in a school of heat.)

Vas por ahí sin prestar atención
y cae sobre tí una maldición.
En las piscinas privadas las chicas
desnudan sus cuerpos al sol.
No des un paso, no des un mal paso,
esto es una escuela de calor.

(You go around without paying attention
and a curse falls upon you.
In private pools, the girls
bare their bodies to the sun.
Don't take a step, don't give a wrong step,
this is a school of heat.)

Deja que me acerque,
deja que me acerque a tí.
Quiero vivir del aire,
quiero salir de aquí.
Arde la calle al sol de poniente,
hay tribus ocultas cerca del río,
esperando que caiga la noche estoy.
Hace falta valor, hace falta valor,
ven a la escuela de calor.

(Let me get closer, let me get closer to you.I want to live on air,I want to get out of here. The street is burning by the setting sun, there are hidden tribes near the river,I'm waiting for the night to fall.It takes courage, it takes courage, come to the school of heat.)

todo se nubla a mi alrededor
ella se fue con un niño pijo,
en un Ford Fiesta blanco
y un jersey amarillo.

(I'm crying in my room
Everything around me gets cloudy
She left with a posh boy
In a white Ford Fiesta
and a yellow jumper.)

Por el parque los veo pasar,
cuando se besan lo paso fatal
voy a vengarme de ese marica
voy a llenarle el cuello...
de polvos pica-pica.

(I see them stroll through the park
It kills me when they kiss
I'm going to get back at that faggot
I'm going to fill his throat...
With itching powder.)

Sufre... mamón! Devuélveme a mi chica
o te retorcerás entre polvos pica-pica.
Sufre... mamón! Devuélveme a mi chica
o te retorcerás entre polvos pica-pica.

(Suffer you jerk, give me back my girl
Or you'll squirm in itching powder
Suffer you jerk, give me back my girl
Or you'll squirm in itching powder.)

Le he quemado su jersey,
y se ha comprado cinco o seis
voy a destrozarle el coche,
lo tengo preparado.
¡Hoy esta noche!

(I've set his jumper on fire,
He bought himself 5 or 6
I'm going to destroy his car
I've got it prepared
for tonight!)

No te reirás nunca más de mí,
lo siento nene vas a morir
tú me quitaste lo que más quería,
y volverá conmigo
volverá algún día...

(You'll never laugh at me again
I'm sorry, boy, but you're going to die
You took from me what I loved the most
And she'll be back with me, back with me one day...)

Sufre... mamón! Devuélveme a mi chica
o te retorcerás entre polvos pica-pica.
Sufre... mamón! Devuélveme a mi chica
o te retorcerás entre polvos pica-pica.

Sufre... mamón! Devuélveme a mi chica
o te retorcerás entre polvos pica-pica.
Sufre... mamón! Devuélveme a mi chica
o te retorcerás entre polvos pica-pica.

(Suffer you jerk, give me back my girl
Or you'll squirm in itchy powder
Suffer you jerk, give me back my girl
Or you'll squirm in itchy powder.

Suffer you jerk, give me back my girl
Or you'll squirm in itchy powder
Suffer you jerk, give me back my girl
Or you'll squirm in itchy powder.)

("The heat of love in a pub")

Amor,

(Darling,
the night was long and full with emotionbut day is coming and is time to be the both of us together.)

(Pubs, what a place
so nice to have a talk inthere is nothing like the heat of love in a pub.)
Amor,
No he sabido encontrar el momento justo

(Darling,
I couldn’t find the right momentbecause with the cold of the night I was not confortable.)
Mozo, ponga un trozo
De mayonesa y un café
Que a la señorita la invita "monsieur".

(Waiter, serve a piece
of mayonnaise and a coffeethat the lady will be invited by “monsieur".)

(And two larks watch are watching us without paying much attention
the waiter is reading "El As" journal avidly.)

(Pubs, what a place
so nice to have a talk inthere is nothing like the heat of love in a pub.)
Amor,

(Darling,
even though at this time I’m not quite composedfinally, it is the time to say it: I love you.)
Pollo, otro bollo,

(Hey mate, another cake,
don’t let me going there and take it by myselfthere is nothing like the heat of love in a pub.)

(Boss, don’t complain and serve me another drink there is nothing like the heat of love in a pub.
The heat of love in a pub. The heat of love in a pub.)

MUSICAL REVIEW

This song is a bout a man with his girlfriend at a pub. He is in love with her and he is about to declare her his love in the middle of that sort of "chaos" which is that pub, with the waiters rushing, full of people, noise, etc, so tipical from Madrid.
As far as tempo is concerned it is Allegro, in other words quite fast. As for time, it is duple time. At the beginng of the song we can hear the drums and a keyboard playing a cathy rhythm together. Then, the singer starts to sing and two electric guitars and an electric bass join in. We can also hear a "bandurria" playing, which is a traditional Spanish plucked string instrument similar to the Italian mandolin.

LOS SECRETOS

BIOGRAPHY

los-secretos.jpgLos Secretos ("The Secrets") was a Spanish pop rock band from Madrid and were very popular in the 80's and the 90's. Their music fused pop rock music with country music. The band was originally formed by the "Urquijo brothers" (Javier and Álvaro, who played the electric guitar, and Enrique who played the electric bass) and José Enrique Cano (who played the drums, and was the composer and the lead voice of the band). In 1999 Enrique Urquijo died and it was a difficult moment for the band, although they didn't split up and released a new Tribute Album dedicated to him. "Los Secretos" are still active today, and some of their most important songs are "Sobre un vidrio mojado" ("Over a wet piece of glass") and "Déjame" ("Leave me").

LYRICS: "Déjame" ("Leave me")

Déjame, no juegues más conmigo,
esta vez, en serio te lo digo
tuviste una oportunidad,
y la dejaste escapar.

(Leave me, don’t play with me anymore,
This time, I really mean it
You had an opportunity
And you let it get away.)

Déjame, no vuelvas a mi lado,
una vez, estuve equivocado,
pero ahora todo eso pasó,
no queda nada de ese amor.

(Leave me, don’t come back to my side,
Once, I was wrong,
But all this is over now,
Nothing is left of this love.)

(There is nothing you can do now
Because I will not come back by your side, I won't.)

Déjame, ya no tiene sentido,
es mejor que sigas tu camino,
que yo el mío seguiré,
por eso ahora déjame.

(Leave me, It has no sense now,
It’s better that you follow your way now,
I will follow mine,
So now leave me)

(There is nothing you can do now
Because I will not come back by your side, I won't.)

Déjame, ya no tiene sentido,
es mejor que sigas tu camino,
que yo el mío seguiré,
por eso ahora déjame,

(Leave me, It has no sense now,
It’s better that you follow your way now,
I will follow mine,
So now leave me)

Tuviste una oportunidad
y la dejaste escapar

(You had an opportunity
And you let it get away.)
